OK, lets say you want to make a video with a VHS effect, but you're too stubborn and stupid to just slap a filter on it in After Effects (or anything that isn't an adobe product), what do you do? Well you do it the hard way and record it using a VCR! I heard this was what Check it Out! With Dr. Steve Brule did for recording their show and was enamored to try and do it myself. It was hell on earth.

I learned the hard way, and was actually surprised at how much I liked how it came out, and figured it would be fun to let others know how to do it to save them the hell that was researching for this. The one small downside is for all my research: I was never able to get it to record audio, so audio mixing will be up to you.

The setup here was able to get an output like this video for example:

STEP 1: Acquire Hardware

First thing you'll need hardware, in which you need:

1.) A VCR (duh)

2.) VHS tapes

3.) 2 pairs of RCA Cables

4.) A converter (specifically an HDMI to AV one)

and 5.) An AV Video Capture device

In my personal setup I used a Panasonic PV-V4611 VCR, TDK T160 VHS Tapes, This HDMI to AV converter, and the GV USB2 Video Capture device, and generic RCA Cables (linked is sites to buy the cables, capture device and converter, the rest should be easy to find on eBay or Goodwill).

STEP 2: Software/Driver Setup

Software/Drivers needed for this will be:

1.) OBS to record the VHS playback

2.) VLC media player to play the file you want to record

3.) the AV Capture device drivers

The AV Capture device linked comes with a CD that has the drivers needed to record, install them and restart the computer. Once restarted it should be good to go.

STEP 3: Connecting VCR to Computer

This part was the most confusing so I made a small diagram to show how it's setup.

iu_1270146_9384030.png

STEP 4: Recording to VHS

Open OBS, create a scene and add a source, select "Video Capture Device", GV USB2 should appear and it looks like this:

iu_1270147_9384030.webp

That way you can see what you're recording.

Place VHS into VCR, select the channel that shows the output of the monitor through the VCR like so:

iu_1270148_9384030.webp

Once it looks like this it's ready for recording, play the file using VLC media player (select it to not show the file name or play/pause when starting to not be in the tape recording.

Press record on the VCR when you're ready and hit play on the PC to start the video, once finished press STOP on VCR to finish recording.

Next, select VHS on the VCR (or go to channel 1) and rewind to the beginning of the video recording, then hit STOP to pause it.

STEP 5: Recording the Recording

OBS naturally sets it to record at your monitors aspect ratio, which is not good for VHS. VHS is in 4:3 and naturally smaller, therefore it looks blurrier at higher resolutions. In settings, select 'Video' and set recording aspect ratio to 1024x768 (select it to manually put it in since sometimes it doesnt have a drop down for the resolution).

NOTE: I used a separate HDMI port from my main monitor as to not mess up its resolution, if you put it to another port then the USB2 should still pick it up just fine.

Then simply hit start recording on OBS , then hit Play on VCR to record the VHS playback. When its done with the recording hit stop on OBS and hit STOP on the VCR so it doesnt keep running the tape.

(MAKE SURE THE RECORDING OF OBS IS IN SYNC WITH THE FPS OF THE VIDEO YOU RECORDED IF YOU EXPORTED THE VIDEO AT 24FPS RECORD OBS IN 24FPS)

Annnd... that's it mainly. The rest is up to you on editing and cutting to time. Hope this was fun to learn and maybe helps you get a cool aesthetic for your videos!

Heyo, happy Robot Day! Me and @JUDASmakesMUSIC made a track for it not too long ago, give it a listen!

(We didn't spend 4 months on and off making it for just 100 people to listen lmao).

WHAT

I started making random stuff in 2018, I never actually started posting anything here until Dec. 2021, and I can safely say I never expected to get to where I am this fast. Maybe 150, 200, but 500!?!? Crazy. Just crazy.

Huge thank you to everyone who likes my music, I really really appreciate it!

Not-so fun fact, it's the 38th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Remember those brave dudes.

I was put on this earth this day to do one thing, and one thing only.

Make semi acceptable background music.

That is all.

2023

What a year, full of supreme highs, and supreme lows. I can safely say more highs than lows for sure. Looking back I didn't realize just how much I did this year, so I'll try to be concise with it.

-I started the year around 89-90 Fans, I reached 100 in February, 200 in June, and 300 in October! Were already almost to 400 so here's hoping for the best.

-In total, including collabs, I created 62 songs, 54 if you don't count Collab entries, of which 46 were Frontpaged! (Total views for all (excluding collabs) calculated to 155 thousand. Wow.)

Key moments (In chronological order):

-I made a track for a Game Jam called Escape Pod 7, check it out!

-I released an EP made with a good non-NG friend in February, F-777 left a review which was crazy. Give it a listen!

-I collabed with LD-W to make a track for in the NG Audio Portal 20th Anniversary Collab! (around 1:14:26)

-I heard a track from PredatorMusic, very 80s workout tape vibe, and It reminded me of how much fun it is to make those tracks and inspired me to make one, check it out!

-I made a fun lil synthwave track with help from previously mentioned PredatorMusic!

-A track I made for this years AIM Contest got Runner-up! Thank you to Splootulu for allowing me to use her art!

-I made music for CalamityGanon's Game: Russian Roulette!

-I made a track for the PICO DAY COLLAB ALBUM! I also gave some MIDI help to Midgetsausage for it so check out their awesome track too!

-I made a track for Metallis's TF2 Animation!

-I was able to get Kettako to play some funky guitar for a track!

-I created a Metal rendition of a Carol for the Newgrounds Christmas in July Album!

-I made a track for the Newgrounds Genre-hopping Collab!

-I made an almost 9 minute long rock opera thingy, check it out!

-I made a fun little loop with oh-turbo-nerd for 8/08 Day!

-I collabed with Aalasteir to make a UK punk song for the Newgrounds Vintage Sounds Collab!

-I failed out of NGUAC 2023 tryouts this year but I'm proud of the Dubstep attempt I made!

-I made another Game Jam OST for Plant Power Panic!

-I made a fun track for 9/09 Day!

-I made a track for the Slumberland Collab Album!

-I made a metal track for Madness Day 2023!

-Probably the craziest moment so far in my short NG career, For the NG Shrieks and Screams Collab, I was able to make a track with Thetageist, 2 non-NG voclists (credits in the song), and JOSHUA TOMAR BAYBEEEE. I did not honestly thing that would happen. Check it out!!!

-I made a track for Dry's Collaborative Autumn Album!

-I won the Parody Award for NGWSC 2023!

-I made an egyptian styled track for the NG Boss Showdown Challenge!

-I made a track for the Newgrounds VS. Boyfriend collab album! (around 2:13)

-For this years Music Secret Santa I went out of my comfort zone to try and make a Chiptune track for VeryFakeGuest!

-I made a synth rendition of O' Holy Night for Christmas!

-And to cap off the year with a neat little bow, I made music for multiple entries in the NGTV Marathon Collab!

Probably can't show thumbnail (by BastardFromBrooklyn)

10 of my favorite tracks this year:

Special Thanks:

-The members behind the Game Jams I made music for

-AhWham, Tritnew, Dry, and MasterHand4444; for setting up nearly all the collabs I participated in, and just being cool dudes.

-Aalasteir, AugustinGates, ArtCompany, BastardFromBrooklyn, Blackacid0fth, PredatorMusic, Intrapath, Kettako, Kolumbo, Thetageist, and Tomar; for dealing with my manic ass and collaborating with me this year, thank you.

-Metallis; for being cool and allowing me to make music for your series.

-TeraVex; for being a cool dude too.

-Staintocton; for showing me awesome WIPs

-TomFulp; for making NG and giving me a chance to achieve goals I thought I'd never be able to do.

-And all my fans/friends, or people who just like what I do, thank you all. Saying "all my fans" sounds weird, I use it only because its what the site calls you, but I prefer friends, cause saying fans is like I'm a pop star, and I'm far from that.

This year was surprising to say the least. I never thought I'd reach this far by basically only making music and doing nothing else. Around early to mid August I hit a wall, I fell into a spiral of self-loathing and apathy. I constantly felt like nothing I did worked, no matter what I made it wasn't good enough, no one needed me, and I started to feel desperate.

I can safely say that was the worst part this year mentally for me, and I'm happy to say I don't feel that way right now, in fact I feel good. I hope 2024 is prosperous for all of you, may fortunes shine your way, opportunities be seized, goals not just met, but smashed, and perfect health not just now, but evermore.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

(also new album coming soon, hoping to get a lot of NG collabs for it! Stay tuned)

As the title says, I tried making a Demo Reel to show off my music better. Check it out on my website.

And a sorta update. To tell the truth, lately I've felt more and more disheartened making music, I can't explain it. I've said before in a forum post I feel I started too late in things, and for these past few weeks I've felt worse and worse about it. Maybe I'm being over-dramatic, maybe not, either way I still feel down about my future, and if I can keep going on with this or if I'm wasting my time.

That isn't to say I hate making music now, or haven't had success or been in fun projects so far. I have and they've been awesome, it's just that I can't shake this feeling of dread about things. Dreading that I'm not needed, or not useful, or any other shitty things that pop in my head.

I might slow down in making music, or maybe I'll feel better about things and keep up. Time will tell.

Thanks for reading my pity-party lol

Turns out I did a lot this year.

Looking back I made this account June of 2021. I only actually started posting content near the same time as now but last year, late December 2021. I had the name BarlonMando. I liked it but realized that it was already in use irl, so I chose the name I had been going by for a while before that, TeffyD. On Dec 15th, I posted "Jazz Rock Song". After that I decided to be more active and post more songs, new and old, cause more sites is better than no sites. Eventually it evolved and I was able to make more of a foundation. I got scouted by the awesome Viraxor, and then things started to really take off.

-Jan 5th I got my first ever frontpage for Smooth Listening!

-Feb 28th I released my first ever EP - Pure Moods, Funk Grooves! The track "Pure Moods" eventually got BEST OF FEBRUARY for audio!

-I helped make ragtime covers for MMFan2004's 2022 Flash Forward Submission! Check it out!

-I partook in AIM, NGUAC and NGADM this year, and while I didn't make it past the semi-finals of ADM, I got Runner Up in AIM with the track Pole Position!

-I also partook in this years Halloween Spooktacular, joined with the wonderful GrantTheHierophant and Luckydee! How I was able to get them to VA still boggles my mind, prolly just because they're cool dudes. And guess what??? WE GOT FIRST PLACE IN AUDIO!!!!

-Nov 22, I released my first ever full length album, Greatest Hits! (I know the video image cuts off a minute in I wasn't able to get it working lol). Some were re-workings of tracks I posted earlier, some are new. Give it a listen anywhere you can stream!

-And to cap off the year, Dec 18th, I submitted an entry into music Secret Santa! I made a jazz piece for the awesome Staintocton! Check out the song he made for me too! It bops. You should also check out his Junk Drawer EP when It releases!

2022 was a crazy year for me. Personally It was a lot of highs and lows, never really a middle line. I know I slowed down in posts near the end, work, mental health stuff, busy busy busy, yada yada yada. Here's hoping I can continue this workflow and keep you guys entertained with the very random array of tracks I end up making. Thanks to everyone who followed, and to the wonderful creators who made stuff for me or were willing to collab with my dumb-ass. And here's to a healthy, safe, 2023.

Cheers.

ALSO I GOT TOM FULP TO FOLLOW ME HOLY HELL WHAT HOW
